What inspired you to work for Montana Innocence Project?

Early in my career, I had the opportunity to work closely with adults hospitalized for severe mental illness. I watched a system that was meant to help people, consider their health and their futures, and support them in moving forward. Instead, I saw a system that kept the most vulnerable of populations caught in a cycle. This experience sparked a fire and curiosity within me to learn more about these systems and to ask difficult questions, like why?

As I’ve learned more about the criminal legal system, I’ve seen similar patterns. I witness systems that state that they are designed to serve justice-impacted people but can, in practice, work against their well-being and futures. I am inspired to be part of an organization working to change that. I am excited to bring my experience in operations to help make that work as effective, sustainable, and impactful as possible.

What’s one thing you believe about justice in America?

I am still learning so much about the criminal legal system, but one thing that strikes me again and again, is how much the people behind these stories can get lost in the systems themselves.

In stories of justice, I am amazed by the people who have had to overcome unimaginable obstacles to experience justice. In stories of injustice, I am struck by how often the systems meant to deliver justice fail to provide a path toward it.

To me, justice must start with the people. The accused, the victims, the families, and the communities. All of these people need to be considered and should matter most in how we understand and pursue justice.
