Remembering Rob Garding

The Garding family at Tell Us Something, a live storytelling event where Katie told her wrongful conviction story in June 2022. From left to right: Boyfriend, Victor; Katie; Dad, Rob; Sister, Chyrel; Mom, Lori; Sister, Kena; and son, Carson.

Proud father, loving husband, inspirational advocate for innocence, talented musician, and beloved member of the Montana Innocence Project family: that was Rob Garding.

It is with deep sadness we share the news of Rob’s passing on Sunday, Nov. 20, following a tragic accidental fall. Rob was surrounded by family at St. Patrick’s hospital in Missoula.

Rob is MTIP client Katie Garding’s dad. In many ways, when someone is wrongfully convicted, their entire family is serving a sentence as well. This was especially true for Rob because of his close relationship with Katie. When she was first incarcerated, he wrote her a song called “See You Through,” which he performed live at our 2021 Wrongful Conviction Day rally.

Rob fought tirelessly for Katie and would jump at the opportunity to help MTIP in any way he could. He will be dearly missed.
