This National Card and Letter Writing Month: Send a Message of Hope to an MTIP Client

Historically, April has been recognized as National Card and Letter Writing Month. This year, we would like to use this month as an opportunity to engage our supporters in writing letters of hope for our wrongfully convicted clients.

For those wrongfully convicted, receiving letters can provide them with a sense of hope, community, and encouragement. By taking the time to write a personal letter, we can make meaningful connections with wrongfully convicted individuals who may feel isolated and disconnected from society.

Exchanging letters with someone who is wrongfully convicted can also help you to develop empathy and a broader understanding of another’s life experiences and perspectives.

Things to consider when writing your letter:

  • Remember to use discretion as communications are not private.
  • Refrain from discussing sensitive information. Specifically, avoid asking about a client’s conviction or legal proceedings, as it could impact their case or be used against them in the future.

Tips for what to write in your letter:

  • Start by writing a little background about yourself. Share your name, where you are from, and how you got connected with them.
  • Ask questions about their interests, hobbies, favorite things, dreams, or future goals.
  • In return, tell them about yourself! Share things like: what you do in your spare time, your studies, work, pets, favorite music, etc.
  • For our currently incarcerated clients, consider sharing more about the outside world. Discuss current events, new movies you’ve seen, books you’ve read, or experiences you’ve had.
  • Share words of encouragement and positivity—By sending uplifting messages and positive thoughts, we can help to brighten their day and give them a sense of hope for the future.

You can submit your letter below, or you can send a direct message to our socials @Bigskyinnocence. At the end of this month, we’ll print the letters we’ve received, and send them out to our clients!

Thank you for your support! More than ever, your kind words could make a lasting impact in our clients’ fight for justice.
